Academic Technology Podcast - Episode 14

Kimberly: Hello and welcome to the fourteenth episode of the Academic Technology Podcast. I'm Kimberly Hayworth, the manager of Academic Computing's Consulting and Multimedia Services group.

Today’s episode includes an interview with Eleanor Brown , Editor of the “Speaking of Computers” e-Newsletter about the Spring 2007 issue.

Kimberly: Eleanor, what is “Speaking of Computers”?

Eleanor: It’s a quarterly e-newsletter where you’ll find the latest technology-related news and computing services and resources on campus.

Kimberly: Oh that’s great. And who is the primary audience for “Speaking of Computers?”

Eleanor: It’s Stanford’s academic community that’s faculty, students and staff, but with an emphasis on faculty and students.

Kimberly: And what types of topics do you cover?

Eleanor: Information about services and resources. The Spring issue includes articles about such topics as the new version of Coursework which is Stanford’s course management system and it becomes the production system in summer.

There’s also something about free internet access through iPass and that’s available through August 2007. And a new Information Center website that provides reference help for the faculty and students and anyone really in the Stanford Community and they now have iChat reference. New electronic resources including free images for scholars from the Metropolitan museum and new chemistry resources and much more on that. A way to add Socrates which is Stanford’s on-line catalog to your browser search box and results of the undergraduate computing survey that’s a yearly survey, news about Consulting and Multimedia Services in Meyer, a reminder to upgrade the Stanford Desktop Tools, and news about Academic Technology Specialists and what are they’re doing to help faculty and students in various departments and much more

Kimberly: Wow! It sounds like a very interesting overview of things that are going on on campus. And how do you submit articles for “Speaking of Computers?”
